We have been busy baking bread the last two days! Yesterday we made monkey bread. To make monkey bread we used biscuit dough. We cut each piece of biscuit dough into four pieces. Then we dipped the dough into melted butter and rolled it in sugar and cinnamon. Then we put the pieces of dough in a bunt pan and baked it for 30 minutes. We got to eat hot, fresh monkey bread. The monkey bread was sweet and yummy. We went back for seconds, and thirds, and fourths!
Yesterday afternoon we baked tortillas from scratch. First we read the recipe and figured out which ingredients we would need.
Next we mixed flour, salt, shortening, and water in a bowl.
Then we rolled the dough into small balls.
We used a tortilla press to flatten the balls of dough.
We cooked the flattened dough on a hot grill. We had to be super careful. It didn’t take the tortillas very long to cook.
We noticed that our tortillas did not rise because we didn’t put yeast in them like we do other breads. That’s why they are a flat bread. We sprinkled them with cheese and ate them. Yummy!
This morning we got to make corn bread with Mr. Danny. We are getting very good at reading recipes and measuring ingredients.
It was a bittersweet afternoon because we had to say good-bye to one of our community members. Today was Ella’s last day with us. We spent time talking about favorite memories we had with Ella and taking fun pictures. We gave Ella a special card and a poster that we made for her. Then we ate yummy treats and spent the rest of the afternoon playing with Ella. Ella, you will be greatly missed! Please keep in touch with your friends at the ELC.
This will be our last blog post of 2009. Please have a safe, relaxing break. We will see you back in school on January 4th!
