Monkey bread, tortillas, and corn bread

We have been busy baking bread the last two days! Yesterday we made monkey bread.  To make monkey bread we used biscuit dough.  We cut each piece of biscuit dough into four pieces.  Then we dipped the dough into melted butter and rolled it in sugar and cinnamon.  Then we put the pieces of dough in a bunt pan and baked it for 30 minutes.  We got to eat hot, fresh monkey bread. The monkey bread was sweet and yummy.  We went back for seconds, and thirds, and fourths!

Yesterday afternoon we baked tortillas from scratch.  First we read the recipe and figured out which ingredients we would need.

Next we mixed flour, salt, shortening, and water in a bowl.

Then we rolled the dough into small balls.

We used a tortilla press to flatten the balls of dough.

We cooked the flattened dough on a hot grill. We had to be super careful. It didn’t take the tortillas very long to cook.

We noticed that our tortillas did not rise because we didn’t put yeast in them like we do other breads.  That’s why they are a flat bread. We sprinkled them with cheese and ate them. Yummy!

This morning we got to make corn bread with Mr. Danny. We are getting very good at reading recipes and measuring ingredients.

It was a bittersweet afternoon because we had to say good-bye to one of our community members.  Today was Ella’s last day with us.  We spent time talking about favorite memories we had with Ella and taking fun pictures.  We gave Ella a special card and a poster that we made for her. Then we ate yummy treats and spent the rest of the afternoon playing with Ella. Ella, you will be greatly missed! Please keep in touch with your friends at the ELC.

Today we took Alice and Hazel out during center time.  We feed them, pet them, and observed them interacting with each other. We also got to hold them!

Ms. Shelley came to our class to sing and play today.  We used scarves to express ourselves and move along with the music.

Today we baked banana bread. It was so much fun to smash the bananas with our hands.  The warm, fresh banana bread tasted delicious at the end of the day!  Some of us also experimented with color mixing while others engineered block structures.

We had our second authors celebration today. We started with our Authors Circle where each author read a favorite page of their story to the group.  Then we spilt off into pairs to read our whole story to each other.  We switched partners several times so we got to hear several stories and share our own story with several friends. Then we met in our classroom library where we applauded as each author added his/her book to our classroom library. Then we had a special toast with orange-blueberry sparkling juice and cookies.

Today we used the SMARTboard to create a list of different types of bread.  We drew pictures of the different breads and labeled our pictures.  We will continue adding to our list throughout our unit on bread.

During Writers Workshop we talked about how people write for a variety of purposes.  Then we worked on our own individual writing projects.  Some of wrote recipes or to do lists. Others created calendar, stories, or cards.
